Tired of being in the dark.

Today there was a serious surge of activity over Joseph Kony (maybe it's been going on all week, I can't be sure as I've been without internet for the past 5 days....). The video that was compiled to make him "famous" is circulating Facebook.  I for one think this is a very good thing.  The more people that know about the issue the better, right?  Facebook can be a great outlet for activism, sharing and spreading information at speeds that were unthinkable just 10 years ago.  But a Facebook friend of mine pointed out the problems with this form of "activism".  Who's to say that people won't just forget about things tomorrow?  All of that valuable, crucial information they just learned simply leaks out of their head after the  feelings of guilt and shock subside.  I tend to think more optimistically, hoping that at least one person out there will be strongly affected by what they've heard and try to do more than just use it as a topic of temporary Facebook gossip.  But, maybe I'm wrong.

At any rate, I've decided that I am going to be one of those people that cares enough to learn more.  That friend of mine that was realistic enough to point out the negatives of the Facebook movement mentioned several names of other, shall we say, "global criminals" that I had never heard of before.  The argument was that other people besides Kony should be receiving as much of this publicity as he now is.  And so they should! I'd like to consider myself at least semi-globally aware (at least I don't live under a rock).  So why had I never heard of Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, a man who earned the title "biggest drug lord of all time" from Forbes magazine??  That seems like pretty crucial information, and I was missing it!  I'm disappointed in myself.  However, I see this as a perfect opportunity.  I'm in my last semester of college, and very soon I will no longer be able to rely on school to just bring me information (like I've expected it to do for the last 4 years).  It's time for me to actually take some semblance of responsibility of my life! So I'm educating myself.  Feel free to join me on the trip, the more people that are learning the better! And please, feel free to help me learn.  The internet isn't always the most reliable source of knowledge...

Well, at any rate, I hope someone in the Facebook world still gives a crap about the rest of the [actual] world tomorrow.  I know I will!
